“ I came across Cocina Ecléctica randomly in an article on “what to do for one night in San Jose”. This was such a cool experience and I wish my families flights hadn’t been delayed so they could have joined. Very unsuspecting on a regular residential street, no signs in sight for the place (kind makes it more exciting though). Contact Joanna on WhatsApp for a reservation, preferably 1 day in advance. The staff and Joanna herself, will serve you food until you cannot eat anymore, dessert included. No menu, you get the experience of eating whatever they are cooking that day. I asked no questions. All incredibly delicious. See pictures. The vibes are 15/10. *chefs kiss* When you find it, ring the doorbell and you walk in to an “eclectically” decorated home turned restaurant. Her cats and dogs are running around but don’t bother unless you want to be :) Highly recommend trying this place. ”

“ Absolutely the coolest dinner environment I’ve ever had. The dishes come unannounced, and my favorite didn’t have a name, I labeled it noodle in pan flop w/cheese. The proprietor is a fantastic lady that has assembled a collection of stuffs from around the world and shares it all with the guests to see. Indoor/outdoor dining in a magnificent home setting. 100% will be a must on San Jose visits. ”

“ Price-quality-original experience relation was good. The place is a real familiy home, very quiate, relaxed, not romantic. 3 course surprise menu. We had a salmon salad, chicken thai soup and potato dumplings with mushrooms. The best of all dishes was the seasoning, the dressings, were really balanced….i was missing a strong main course something like meat. The weather was also too hot for soup. All portions were really big and handmade. the price is totally worth it ”

“ Interesting concept. I asked Joana if she prepped the meals beforehand. She said she goes out the day of to buy some groceries. Then it’s all inspiration from there. Definitely a form of art where the meal is a blank canvas and she paints it with intention and love. ”

“ Wow!! We stumbled upon this amazing gem of a restaurant based on the high reviews and beautiful photos, but little did we know what an experience we were in for. You park on the street of an unassuming residential block to a metal door that you have to be buzzed in to. We were invited into what felt like the courtyard of a beautiful home. There were very limited tables. Artistic decor. Many tropical plants. And then we were treated to a menu-free fine dining experience where plate after plate continues to be brought out until you surrender satiated. The owner of the establishment is the chef, who is self taught, but extraordinarily talented. The desserts are made in house by the daughter. The coffee was prepared perfectly and the juice appeared fresh squeezed. When we were given the total, it was about half what we expected it to be for the experience we had. If you find yourself reading this review, take this as a sign to not miss your opportunity to dine in what feels like the home of family, where meals are prepared with creativity, skill, and love. ”

“ A true gem hidden away in the city. I only wish I had known about this place years ago! I can’t say enough about the surprising experience we had at Joanna’s home. Her culinary skills are unrivaled. From the walk up, to the courtyard atmosphere, to the human connections and the stellar food - I was blown away every step of the way. I’m not even sure what we ate, but there were many courses enjoyed and it was beyond the quality of any food I’ve had in Costa Rica. I know this is a spot we’ll be back to time and time again. ”

“ My cousin and I had the pleasure of experiencing Cocina Ecléctica while vacationing in Costa Rica. This hidden gem was recommended to me by Star, a beautiful soul who attended my very first yoga retreat hosted in Costa Rica back in 2018. She insisted I couldn’t leave Costa Rica without dining here and now I see why. Joanna’s home is truly an oasis of lush tropical plants, vibrant art, and yes, a few friendly cats and dogs roaming about (don’t worry, they won’t disturb you). We were in awe from the moment we walked through the door. There was no menu, no expectations you simply sit down and dishes begin to appear. I honestly couldn’t even name everything we ate, but every bite was fresh, authentic, and absolutely exquisite. It felt like being welcomed into someone’s home and gifted with their culinary brilliance. And the best part? The price was about half of what we would’ve paid for a meal of this caliber in the States. Thank you, Joanna, for blessing our vacation with such a memorable dining experience.
